The rate of infection is defined as the number of confirmed cases in a state divided by the total population. Daily case and death numbers are calculated using a simple difference between consecutive days and smoothed using a 7-day moving average. "Hospitalizations" is defined as the number of patients currently hospitalized in an inpatient bed with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 on a given day. Hospitalizatons are smoothed using a 7-day moving average. Case and death data are acquired from state level data made publicly available by the New York Times and the Johns Hopkins University's Center For Systems Science and Engineering. Hospitalization data are acquired from HealthData.gov.
